Mist Mountain Hike Details
Distance: 8km roundtrip
Elevation Gain: Approximately 500m
Difficulty: Moderate
Time Required: Approximately 3 Hours
Trailhead Coordinates: 50.522814° N, 114.883516° W
Finding The Mist Mountain Trailhead
The most difficult part of this hike is finding the actual trailhead. The trailhead for Mist Mountain isn’t marked, so you need to use the GPS coordinates above to find the exact starting point. Without these GPS coordinates it would be nearly impossible to find.
If you are driving from Canmore, once you reach the coordinate point on Highway 40 in Kananaskis, the trailhead will be on the left side of the highway. You can’t see the physical trail from the road so you will need to walk into the treeline and find the well worn trail. There were some hiking sticks piled at the treeline where the trailhead was when we visited.
*Note: When we started this hike, there were a few trails that were slightly worn. We began to follow this but quickly turned around as we realized it was a path made out of error. The actual trail is well worn and looks like an actual hiking trail.
VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure to enter the trailhead coordinates before you start driving into Kananaskis Country as there is no cell service there!
Hiking to The Mist Mountain Hot Springs
Once you have successfully found the trailhead, the trail itself is well worn and super easy to follow. You are going to hike in the treeline for quite sometime before coming to a massive valley clearing.
Continue to follow the well worn path through the valley and up to the saddle between the two mountains.
Once you reach the saddle itself, turn left and follow the trail around the mountain. At this point we saw the bright green algae trailing down the side of the mountain from the hot spring.
It’s very hard to miss the hot springs, as the trail will lead you right too them. On a colder day you will also see the steam rising from them.
Things to know before you Hike
- The Hot Springs are on the smaller side and will likely only fit a few people.
- This is a popular hike so there will probably be a few people when you get there. Because they are so small, be prepared to wait your turn.
- They are situated on the side of a mountain so keep in mind there is no place to change with privacy.
- While they are a comfortable temperature, they are not overly hot like most other hot springs we have visited.
- Kananaskis Country is Bear country. Always hike with friends and bring bear spray with you.
Final Thoughts
Mist Mountain Hot Springs are definitely one of the best kept secrets in Kananaskis. These hot springs are well worth the hike to get to. This is hands down one of the most unique experiences we have ever had and highly recommend adding this to your bucketlist!
