Pinterest is one of our favorite social media platforms that we use to plan our trips! We love that we can create different “boards” for every destination we want to visit and store various travel blogs and photos for inspiration and advice! This blog post is an in-depth guide to every step we take when planning our travel using Pinterest!
This post is by no means sponsored by Pinterest, we just really find this a useful tool and wanted to share it with you!
Why We Use Pinterest To Plan Our Trips
First things first, let us explain why we use Pinterest to plan our trips! This platform allows for an infinite amount of “pinning” various photos, blog posts and travel websites to various boards we have created based on destinations.
We love to get inspiration for various places to visit, what restaurants to eat at, and the best hotels to stay in, in destinations around the world. There are so many travel bloggers on this platform that share insider tips and locations of secret spots that aren’t too “touristy” and these are the kind of places we love to discover.
Everything is stored in one central location, and neatly organized based on destination which makes things super easy to find when it comes to finalizing trip plans!
How we set up our Pinterest boards
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of how we plan our trips using Pinterest, we want to offer some advice!
When you first begin to set up your account on Pinterest, thinking about how you want things organized is super important. When we first set ours up we made the huge mistake of having one board for everything travel related, one board for everything house related and one board for everything food related. We had no sections, no rhyme or reason, just pure chaos. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! Reorganizing hundreds of pins totally sucks and wastes so much time.
Within every Pinterest board you create, you can also create sections. These sections are such an incredible tool and we highly recommend using them. It makes things so much easier to find when you are in the midst of planning a trip. We have multiple boards based on different topics and being able to go to a specific section devoted to a topic makes trip planning much faster and less frustrating!
We have various boards dedicated to only one destination. Within this board we have various photos and blog posts saved to help us and our followers plan a trip of a lifetime! But we also have boards where we have sections dedicated to specific destinations. It’s all up to you and how you like things organized.
Let’s Plan a Trip With Pinterest!
Information on the destination itself
Once we decide on a destination for our next trip, we begin searching Pinterest for everything that we need to know about our destination! We first create a board dedicated to this location. Then we look for posts related to it!
We typically look for pins related to the best restaurants to eat at, the best hotels to stay in and little cafes to visit and pin them to this board. We love finding various different pins regarding the same topic as different travel bloggers have different opinions on must visit places! For example; when we published our “10 Must Do Hikes in Oahu” blog, we received a lot of feedback saying that people had never heard of some of these hikes before. We love finding blog posts and pins that make us say the same thing!
We pin a ton of ideas regarding things to do as well. If it is a hiking destination for example, we look for various hiking trails and the best back-country camping spots recommended by different bloggers! Or maybe its iconic places to see in a certain destination! We like to pin a wide variety of activities so that when we actually begin planning our trip we have lots to choose from!
We also love pinning graphic bucket-lists and info-graphics! These give us a quick visual guide to places we may want to visit.

What to Pack
I (Kaylee) love using Pinterest to plan outfits and what to pack! Chances are, there are a ton of bloggers that have visited this destination and have written a great guide on what to pack! I love gathering outfit inspiration as well as get acquainted with dress codes and the typical climate. It is important to be conscious about the weather, as you do not want to be too cold or hot your entire trip. It is also important to think about the culture of the place you are visiting and to be respectful!
Travel Photography
Pinterest is a visual social media platform. We plan a lot of our photos for our Instagram and our Blog based on inspiration from Pinterest. Finding breathtaking places is one of our favorite things about Pinterest. There is so much photography inspiration on this platform.
We also love finding pins dedicated to “secret spots”. Discovering places that are less traveled in popular locations is one of our favorite things to do!
